About the Event

We're hosting a poetry open mic during 2nd Friday Art Walk in July, held in celebration of Every Cell, Lit Up; the collaborative poetry card set from Norman poet Crag Hill and visual artist spontaneous bob, with gracious support from Jennifer Burwell.

The evening takes place within Sculpted Worlds, our current group exhibition featuring Nick Lillard, Chris McDaniel, Jennifer Burwell, Ken Hall, and Claire Holloway. Participating poets will read from the People's Throne, one of the exhibition's installation pieces, making the open mic a part of the show itself.

Every Cell, Lit Up is an interactive set of 52 cards pairing Hill's five-line poems with visual art by spontaneous bob. The card format invites readers to rearrange and explore the work in their own order.

Sign-ups begin at 7 PM. Reading will begin at 7:30 to 8:30PM. All are welcome to read or simply listen.

Sculpted Worlds remains on view through August 2, 2026.

About Every Cell, Lit Up

Playing cards meet poetry in a unique new collaboration from University of Oklahoma professor and poet Crag Hill, and visual artist spontaneous bob. The one-of-a-kind poetry collection, called "Every Cell, Lit Up.” This collection is an interactive set of 52 six- by-six-inch cards featuring five-line poems from Hill, backed by visual art from spontaneous bob, all packaged in a decorative box. The result takes the reader away from a passive experience and invites them to shift and rearrange the poems to create new connections as they explore the words and images. The project is the first release from Norman-based poetry press "Damn! Publishing."

By going with a card format instead of a bound collection, we sought to deconstruct the idea of the book; to allow a reader to alter the order and pacing of the collection. In simple terms, it's a poetry book you can shuffle."

4th Friday Films: Levitated Mass

Friday, June 26, 2026 | 6:00 PM
📍 Uncanny Art House | 106 E Main St, Norman, OK

Levitated Mass is a documentary about one of the most ambitious public art installations in recent memory: artist Michael Heizer's 340-ton granite boulder, transported over eleven nights through the streets of Los Angeles before coming to rest at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The film follows the years of planning, the logistical nightmare of moving an object that size through a living city, and the conversations it sparked about what art is, what it costs, and who it belongs to.

Director Doug Pray captures not just the spectacle of the move itself, but the human story around it. Residents lined the streets at 2 a.m. to watch the rock roll past their neighborhoods. Critics questioned the $10 million price tag. Heizer, famously reclusive, gave rare access to the process. What emerges is a portrait of an artist who thinks in geological time and a public that wasn't sure what to make of him.

The installation, titled Rock My World and eventually renamed Levitated Mass, sits over a slot trench at LACMA, allowing visitors to walk beneath a boulder that has existed for 340 million years. The film asks what it means to move something ancient into a contemporary context, and whether the disruption was worth it.

About the Exhibition

Sculpted Worlds is a group exhibition of large-scale sculpture and immersive installation featuring work by Nick Lillard, Chris McDaniel, Jennifer Burwell, Ken Hall, and Claire Holloway. The show brings together artists working in found object assemblage, bronze, plaster, resin, and large-scale figurative construction, unified by a shared fantastical and otherworldly sensibility. The title reflects both the physical nature of the work and the imaginative environments each artist builds.

Artists

Nick Lillard presents a career survey including chess piece sculptures and large figurative constructions reaching up to ten feet, anchored by an eleven-foot hanger system displaying in the round humanoid sculptures at the center of the gallery floor.

Chris McDaniel, in collaboration with Derek Boston, brings large found object sculptures including a centipede and a praying mantis. McDaniel will also maintain a live found object pile on the gallery floor, adding to it throughout the run of the show as an ongoing process element.

Jennifer Burwell builds a walk-through cave installation in the back corner of the gallery, featuring a white plaster cave structure, lit stalagmites with colored glass, and a resin pond. Individual stalagmite sculptures will be available for purchase.

Ken Hall presents a dozen small bronze masks and sculptures intended for pedestal and wall display, alongside a cast iron work.

Claire Holloway's bronze head sculpture serves as an entryway piece on a pedestal at the front of the gallery.

Sales

Original work by all artists is available for purchase. The exhibition includes pieces at a range of price points. Individual lit stalagmites by Jennifer Burwell will be available as retail items.

This gripping documentary examines the arrest, trial, and sentencing of members of the Russian feminist punk collective Pussy Riot following their 2012 protest performance inside Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Using courtroom footage and interviews with family members, the film documents the global controversy that followed and the broader questions it raised about free expression, political dissent, religion, and state power.

At the center of the story are Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, whose prosecution sparked international outcry and support from artists and human rights organizations around the world.

Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer is both a courtroom drama and a portrait of artistic protest under pressure, continuing our 4th Friday Film series spotlighting artists and movements that challenge cultural and political norms.

Micah Wesley Solo Exhibition

Date: Friday, May 8, 2026 (2nd Friday Art Walk)
Time: 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Location: Uncanny Art House | 106 E Main St, Norman, OK

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

This solo exhibition brings the paintings of Micah Wesley to Uncanny Art House for an opening reception during Norman's monthly 2nd Friday Art Walk. The exhibition arrives on the heels of Wesley's feature in First American Art Magazine (No. 50, Spring 2026).

Wesley's work sits at the intersection of identity, memory, and narrative. Drawing from his Mvskoke and Kiowa heritage and his experience as a tribal member living in urban Oklahoma, his paintings do not offer easy resolutions. They remember and reckon at once, holding the weight of displaced histories alongside a hard-won sense of personal agency. "You control your narrative," Wesley has said. "That's something I feel like it's really important to me now, even in life."

Working primarily in acrylic, and sometimes oil or enamel over gesso on canvas, Wesley builds images of striking two dimensionality, bold color tension, and unmistakable visual authority. His practice extends the Flatstyle tradition rooted in Jerome Tiger and the Bacone and Studio schools while pressing well beyond those boundaries into something entirely his own.

The work is both confrontational and generous. Viewers are invited not just to look, but to consider the narratives they have inherited, and how those narratives might be reshaped.

Lowbrow Love

Beyond painting, Wesley maintains a creative practice that extends into electronic music under the persona DJ Werewulf, drawing from goth nuwave, electronic, and synthwave. The opening of the exhibition will feature a DJ set from La Fantasma of Dos Lo Bos, a collaboration between Micah and Jasmin that hosts a monthly Goth Night at the Opolis and other dance events around the Oklahoma City metro.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Micah Wesley is a painter based in Norman, Oklahoma, and a member of the Mvskoke and Kiowa nations. He holds an MFA in painting from the University of Oklahoma and a BFA from the Institute of American Indian Arts. His work has been featured in First American Art Magazine and is available through his website, Wulfbrand.com.

Wesley comes from a lineage of artists. His father, Tillier Wesley Jr., was a Muscogee Creek painter whose persistence in the face of an indifferent market shaped Micah's understanding of what it means to make uncompromising work.

Step inside the surreal world of In Dreams: A David Lynch Tribute for an evening of uncanny laughter and absurd humor. Comedy in the Black Lodge transforms the gallery into a dreamlike stage for three unforgettable performances.

James Nghiem

Known for his rhythmic delivery, comedic experimentation, and odd perspective, allowing him to approach topics from multiple angles and engage audiences in unexpected ways.

James tackles both the everyday and the almost-never with sharp wit. Filled with non sequitur logic, the seemingly random events that shape his act blur the line between silly and profound. His comedy is bizarre, entertaining, lighthearted, and always fun.

He runs the digital comedy label Robot Saves City, has opened for national headlining acts, and has appeared on several comedy podcasts, including No Fun Intended, alongside guests such as Paul F. Tompkins, Maria Bamford, Doug Benson, Kyle Kinane, Todd Barry, and Marc Maron.

The Martin Duprass

This husband-and-wife duo, known for their offbeat characters and DIY comedy, expanded a quarantine-born sketch into a 37-minute satire about internet fame, awkwardness, and social media chaos. They recently premiered their newest short comedy film, Awkward Gawker, at the Oklahoma Film Exchange on October 18. The film features an ensemble of Oklahoma’s outsider comedy scene and eccentric storytelling.

Jennifer Johnson

A rising Oklahoma comedian (Reweathering America), Jennifer Johnson’s dry wit and disarming honesty turn everyday experiences into sharp, hilarious observations. Her smart, grounded humor opens the night with just the right balance of warmth and weirdness.
