About the Exhibition
Selfish Art returns for the September 2nd Friday Art Walk opening on September 11. The response at the opening reception was incredible. Neighbors, friends, and first time visitors filled the gallery to find themselves and each other on our walls. The exhibit features a decade of photographs by Cody Giles documenting Norman's musicians, artists, organizers, and events; which is a lot of ground to cover in one evening, and a second reception gives the community another chance to experience it.
65 of the 177 framed photographs have already found homes. The remaining work is still priced at $15, with additional oversized portraits in our storefront windows for $35. Every purchase directly supports Uncanny Art House and the programming we are able to bring to downtown Norman. Buying a piece here means taking home a photograph of your city and keeping the doors open for the next artist that works with us. The ten years of Polaroids documenting local events and moments remain on view alongside the framed work and we will have a limited amount of Polaroid film available for the photography station.
4TH FRIDAY FILMS
We will have another a screening for 4th Friday Films on September 25 at 6PM, screening the 2012 documentary, Time Zero: The Last Year of Polaroid Film. This film chronicles the final year of traditional Polaroid instant film production and the group that stepped in to save the format from disappearing. It is a fitting companion to the Polaroids hanging in the gallery, and a look at what it takes to keep an obsolete medium alive when the manufacturer has moved on. Free and open to the public.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Cody Giles is a photographer, organizer, and indie scene documentarian based in Norman, Oklahoma. He began his career teaching high school in Greenville, Texas, before a growing love of concert and live performance photography, first developed in Dallas's Deep Ellum music scene, led him to relocate. Over the past decade in Norman, Giles has photographed and documented the city's musicians, artists, and community events, work that has shaped his role with the Norman Arts Council and the Norman Music Festival's organizational board, where he handles PR, photography, graphic design, and social media for the festival.
