In 2008, Polaroid announced it would stop manufacturing instant film. This was a format that had shaped how the world made pictures for six decades and was given an expiration date, and the machines that produced it were scheduled for scrap.

The film moves between the final months on the factory floor in Enschede, the Netherlands, and the group of former employees, engineers, artists, and collectors who refused to let the chemistry disappear along with the equipment. Among them is The Impossible Project, which bought the last of the machinery and spent a year attempting to reinvent a film that no one had ever built from the ground up, working without the original formulas and without most of the original suppliers.

Featuring artists and technicians who spent careers inside the medium, including Chuck Close and John Reuter of the Polaroid 20x24 Studio, the film is a record of stubbornness. It is a portrait of what people are willing to do to keep a physical, imperfect, unrepeatable image possible in a moment when photography had gone almost entirely to the screen.
