About the Party Walls Initiative

In construction, a party wall is shared between two adjoining properties, and both owners are responsible for keeping it up. It is a shared surface and a shared responsibility. In this context, it is a collaboration between artists, businesses, and property owners.

What makes this different

Party Walls is designed to do more than just become a single landmark. The artwork rotates on a more frequent schedule and also means more artists get paid. One wall, painted once, is a single commission. A space where artwork changes on a schedule can support a different artist every season, year after year, supporting the creative economy and providing opportunities for artists to support their practice, while simultaneously engaging the public by giving them a reason to come back to see the new artwork as it changes. This creates an economic ecosystem that effects the businesses, the artists, and visitors.

Where these murals were painted

The panels in this lot were painted live at Ink the Block Party, an independent arts festival produced by Oscillator Press, Gray Owl Coffee, Uncanny Art House, and Opolis in downtown Norman.

Ink the Block celebrates the disciplines that make up Norman's creative community, with live music, an artists market, woodblock printing demonstrations, and live mural painting. Artists are selected through an open call and paid a day rate to create their work in front of the public over the course of the festival.

Almost a decade ago, Dylan Johnson, who ran the Dojo Zine and venue, was organizing public events in this lot with live music and visual art, before the surrounding district had filled in. That programming is a large part of why this became the ideal location for this type of public art. As the area developed, that activation slowed to a halt, and Party Walls is picking that thread back up.

Thank you

The Party Walls Initiative is supported by the Norman Arts Council and the Public Arts Committee, the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition, and EDO: East Downtown Norman.

Murals featured here were painted at Ink the Block Party 2026.

Get involved

Artists. Open calls are announced here and through Ink the Block Party. This will take place in August 2027.

Property, business owners, and neighborhoods. If you have a wall and you are curious what a rotating program would look like in your space, let’s collaborate to make that happen!

Thank you for taking the time to check out this new initiative! Come see it again when it changes next year. Use the hashtag #partywallsnorman so artists can find their own work out in the world!
